Systems built elsewhere can miss local languages, institutional realities and the practical constraints that shape use in South Africa. Labs investigates those gaps.
The goal is not research theatre. It is a stronger foundation for useful products, responsible programmes and applied systems that can be tested honestly.

South African communication is multilingual, contextual and often code-switching. Labs explores how speech and language systems can better reflect that reality without reducing it to a decorative localisation layer.

Consent-aware data programmes
Local research can require people to contribute language, experience or other material. The programme design matters: purpose, participation, provenance and intended use should be understandable where contribution happens.

Applied AI systems
Labs connects technical exploration to practical South African problems. Promising work can inform products and prototypes, but experiments are not presented as proven capability before they have earned that status.
Evidence policy
Corpus sizes, model names, benchmarks, commercial relationships and research outcomes do not appear here until there is a verified public release to support them.
